To Which I Say: You Have 10 minutes; good luck, Mofo.
About a year ago, I worked with a very tight group of day-to-day co-workers. We were all thirty-somethings selected by the higher-ups of small-town corporate America as being “high-potential” associates, meaning, basically, that we were nowhere near retirement age and capable of rational thought (and passing an occasional drug test).
Long story short, we bonded together and it was not too long before my love of music became a focal point of our group. Whether it was the constant playing of music via my Spotify account or my relentless banter on the music of the day, the fellas soon realized that I was not screwing around when it came to musical “knowledge” (opinion). Looking back, it should not have been a surprise when they challenged me to give them a list of the ten best artists/bands in contemporary music. I thought long and hard about this, squirming like a virgin at co-ed summer camp, before I relented.
Here is the result of that self-exploration (complete without diatribe, hype, or explanation, as hard as that is to do – just go listen to these bands!!!):
Top Ten Contemporary Bands/Artists
10) Timber Timbre
9) Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman)
8) Modest Mouse
7) Ryan Adams
6) Built to Spill (Sir Douglas Martsch, fellow Boise resident)
5) Jack White III (aka The White Stripes, the Raconteurs, The Dead Weather)
4) Queens of the Stone Age
3) Drive-By Truckers
2) Pearl Jam (America’s pre-eminent rock band; see you bastards in August)
Honorable Mentions (for those who want to hear more good music…)
Deer Tick/John McCauley (Middle Brother, Diamond Rugs)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
