Hot off the presses: new music! Better said, new music that is worth your time.
Well this is awkward… Once again, no albums this week that were truly worth my recommendation. This is bound to happen occasionally, I suppose. There were a couple that were fair, however. So, a few quick thoughts on those!
The Brothers Comatose – Ink, Dust & Luck
It is always refreshing to hear contemporary bluegrass that is worth listening to, and this one qualifies – in parts. Leadoff track “Don’t Make Me Get Up and Go” is a pleading yet up-tempo ballad that finds the protagonist begging to not be kicked out – even if it means sleeping on the floor. My favorite track is the stomp-rock of “These Ways”, which was immediately added to my Best of 2018 playlist (which is nearing 500 songs already – it has been quite a solid first half of the year).
Johnny Marr – Call the Comet
Mr. Marr has been slinging an axe in a lot of popular music over the last thirty years, including work with The Smiths, Talking Heads, The The, The Cribs, and Modest Mouse. His third solo LP finds him playing it pretty straight, and while none of this is bad by any means, none of it was particularly inspiring or begged for repeated listens. Here’s to Johnny finding a band to play some guitar riffs for soon.
