Built to Spill (“Music on the Water Festival” at Simplot Park) – 6/2/18

Headlining the second-year festival again, Doug and the boys give the people what they want: guitar-centric indie rock from one of our own.

Much like the early years of Treefort, one could fairly describe Music on the Water as being the festival that Built to Spill built (although it is sponsored not so subtly by Idaho Central Credit Union…).  After headlining the event last year in its inception, the boys were asked to do it again and obliged.  When they were introduced, it was noted by the emcee that their involvement was sincerely appreciated, since BTS “are getting paid next to nothing” to do it.  Of course, I am curious just what that means, but either way we got about 80 minutes of the sonic onslaught we have come to expect.

As they almost always do, they led off with the jammy 9-minute epic that is “Goin’ Against Your Mind”, and even included a subtle jab at the Donald, replacing “they’re really good at that” with “Trump’s really good at that” when talking about deceiving.  I have lost count of the number of times I have seen Doug and his various incarnations of BTS perform, but it is well over a dozen.  At this point, I am running out of things to say about how great they are to see live, but clearly the secret is out as there was a very healthy crowd there to see them – completely filling the area of Simplot Park where the stage was set up.  There was even a drone flying over us recording the whole thing, just another friendly reminder that in the 21st century, we are on camera at all times.

Wearing sunglasses to block against the sun that was right in his face and his trademark shorts and t-shirt fashion (today was a worn out vintage Portland Trailblazers shirt), Doug gave us a mix of songs from seven different BTS albums in addition to their ever-present cover of “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” (don’t say no, just say you don’t know).  Pretty tough to beat the last two songs: the always epic guitar noodling and biting lyrics of “Carry the Zero” and my all-time favorite “Strange” getting the extended treatment.  A good time had by all, including yours truly who was still fairly hung over from an epic brewery takeover the night before.  I rocked out at about 70% yet still probably stood out.  What can I say, when it comes to BTS, count me in.
