As some of you know, I am not exactly crazy about Christmas music. I’ll leave it at that, lest I sound too bah humbug. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the holiday season and the togetherness, family, and love that goes with it – but man, most of those songs sure are annoying. Since I have been hearing quite a bit of it lately I thought I would take the opportunity to share some (not really) holiday songs that I lumped together in an easy to digest Spotify playlist.
Disclaimer: with the exception of the Lumineers excellent take on “Blue Christmas”, this is NOT a batch of Christmas songs. No, instead it is some of my favorites that mention Christmas or New Years – nothing more, nothing less. I think it’s a good listen, much better than listening to “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” for the 500th time, anyway. Oh, and I included both Tom Waits original and the fantastic Kinky Friedman cover of the classic “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis”, a song that if you haven’t heard before might surprise you with its sincerity and charm. Don’t judge a song by its title, is what I am saying.
Since I didn’t exactly spend hours pondering this list, and I’m sure I have forgotten some killer tunes that mention Christmas or the New Year, feel free to comment and let me know.
Happy holidays, y’all…
