New Music 5/3/19:

Hot off the presses: new music!  Better said, new music that is worth your time.

Well, after six albums last week, not much to talk about this week.

Also heard:

Joy Williams – Front Porch

Formerly half of the terrific band The Civil Wars, Joy’s second solo effort since the dissolution of that band is a mixed bag.  There are certainly a few gems here, including “All I Need”, “The Trouble With Wanting”, and the title track – but just as with her former bandmate John Paul White, I question if anything she does on her own will live up to the quality of work that group made.

Bad Religion – Age of Unreason

More of the same from the veteran punk rockers, with cynical takes on modern day American politics.  Highlights are the clever tongue-in-cheek “Do the Paranoid Style” and the terrific album opener “Chaos from Within”.

Vampire Weekend – Father of the Bride

Their music has never really worked for me, although I do admire their quirky and intelligent songwriting and pop-hook chops.

Filthy Friends – Emerald Valley

Enviro-folk that hits a few hot topics but mostly misses the mark.

L7 – Scatter the Rats

Big Thief – U.F.O.F.
